Live Music Fans
We have some excellent local acoustic string players coming in for the next First Friday in downtown Carbondale. Check out some local art, score some food and drink, cruise downtown then drop by for some live music in the best venue in these parts.

Next week, we have some amazingly talented, touring, acoustic string players returning to the shop. Come on out and enjoy these great musicians. It's good for your mental outlook. See you at the shows.

FRIDAY NIGHT - FEBRUARY 3RD - BRISTLECONE DRIVE - 8:30PM - $10

The last time I heard this talented local string trio, they were tearing it up for the Celtic Fest on the Town Plaza stage. Dave "Notes" Notor rips it up on mandolin and sings up a storm. Notes is also a talented fine art painter who loves to make live music and fine art. He will joined by Trevor and Steve to round out a fine acoustic string trio. Should be some sweet sounds in the listening room this week, once again.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT - FEBRUARY 8TH - WILLY PORTER - 8:30PM - $20 www.willyporter.com

Here comes another visit with one of our favorite musicians and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us this time. His past shows have been fantastic; with Willy displaying his awesome guitar skills along with his very cool songs and standup comedy. This multi-talented touring musician has all the parts that you need to put on an awesome show.

Willy has quite a resume which he keeps adding to. I'm impressed that Guild Guitar has a "Willy Porter" model and after seeing him play, I completely understand why. He has toured all over the place and earned critical acclaim from major league musicians like Tori Amos who said: "Willy plays rhythms that make me want to crawl inside his guitar and sleep there forever." I can testify that he creates some gorgeous sounds in our room that no one else has made before. His solo show fills the room completely.

This "phenomenal guitarist and passionate songwriter" has a new release called "How to Rob A Bank" which showcases his continued growth as a songwriter and recording artist. Willy's toured with the likes of Jeff Beck, Tori Amos and many other great players. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull loved his guitar work while touring with Willy and said: "Thank goodness he doesn't play the flute."

Willy is a special musical talent which is best displayed in an intimate setting like ours. He will impress you with his fantastic guitar playing and charm you with his amazing wit and sense of humor. I hope he makes up another song on the spot again. Usually he asks for a topic or phrase (like "frost on the pumpkin") from the audience and then makes up a real song on the spot. He also made up and sang an amazing "Happy Birthday" song for Mary Margaret right on the spot, too. A bit of a musical genius, for sure. Something to see and enjoy. Come on out and see why we like Willy so much. I bet you will have a great time.

FRIDAY NIGHT - FEBRUARY 10TH - THE MATT FLINNER TRIO - 8:30PM - $15 www.mattflinner.com

Matt and his musical mates also make songwriting look easy like Willy. Matt will continue their "Music du Jour" project where each member of the trio will write a new song the day of the show and play it that night at the show. Talk about fresh music! This week we get the true delight of enjoying live, original music that was created right on the spot or within hours of its performance. Just try and find fresher music this week. Like fresh bread from the oven, this should be delicious.

This talented, Colorado based, acoustic trio was "sonically founded in bluegrass, jazz and American acoustic music." Matt is joined by Eric Thorin on standup bass and Ross Martin on guitar. Together they form a "finely tuned composition machine" that turns out original music on the go; "writing in hotel rooms, dressing rooms, on airplanes and in the back of tour vans and debuting the new pieces the same night." Quite a brave and creative approach to making original musical. Talk about putting a little pressure on your self. This is not a cover band in any sense.

They are also debuting their latest album "Winter Harvest" which is a "road-crafted sequel to their 2009 release, "Music du Jour". The trio have over 200 original songs in their repertoire and they have chosen 15 of their favorites for the new album. The trio self-defines itself as "deeply rooted new acoustic music" and Flinner himself "blurs the lines between jazz and bluegrass, traditional and avant-garde".

Originally a banjo player, Matt won the National Banjo Contest at Winfield in 1990 and then decided the mandolin must be easy to learn how to play, too. Why not, right? Matt is creating his own blend of music with some very talented players to inspire his creative spirit. This is a true collaboration of some very fine Colorado players that love to play in a listening room where you can really hear their music.

Matt keeps on striving to create his original music and believes that "bluegrass and jazz are both improvisational and truly American." Flinner says: "We strive to advance the bluegrass genre and do new things with it, hopefully creating a unique form out of other uniquely American forms." This should be sweet to hear this trio as they begin their Rocky Mountain West tour to celebrate the release of their new album. Come on out and enjoy some beautiful music as fresh as it comes.

Musically Yours,

Steve, Mary Margaret and Shannon

PS: We had a wonderful time listening to Martha Scanlan's gorgeous voice on Sunday night. She writes some beautiful songs and her amazing voice took the room to another place and time. Martha has created songs that were inspired by the experience of living on a ranch in Montana and being connected to the land. Her brittle yet strong vocals entranced the audience and cast a spell. Jon Neufeld was an excellent complement to the songs with some very sweet acoustic guitar and backup vocals. Really nice folks who sounded so fine in the listening room.

And last Friday Night we were happy to welcome back Craig and Lorraine Curry and Elliott Leonard back to the room after a long hiatus. Glad to see they have been busy while away playing all over the area as Acoustic Mayhem, The Curry's and the Leonard Curry Trio. These local musicians have been making great live music for years and it was a treat to hear them again. I just love hearing good acoustic string players in the shop. When you add 3-part harmonies, it just gets better. These musicians have a great spirit and excellent sense of humor that really helps make their performances a true delight. We had a blast and hope they don't stay away so long before coming back. Another week of fine live music. Hope you got to enjoy some of it.
